Analysts of past student trillers
After Eight:
Camera:
When they filmed this clip they use a verity of different camera angles. I believe that they used these very well, as at the start of the clip they used the medium shot for when the boy was walking down the garden. This allows people to see where he is going and where he is at the same time. Therefore, when the girl was int eh kitchen they used a close up to show people what she was doing. In the first part of the clip it was good how they flicked from one thing to the other, allowing the people to see what was going on in side the house and outside of the house. However, a close up was then used when the boy was searching around, this was used to make the audience wonder what it was that he was looking for. Therefore, this camera angle which was a high angle was used to build up tension for the audience making them wonder what was going. After this they used the camera to make it look like everything was normal, the way that they did this was by keeping it as medium shots and just flicking back and forth to each character. However, there is then a close up on a axe on the kitchen side with blood on it. Allowing the audience to see something has gone and and making them wonder what is going to happen next. I believe that they used all the camera angles in the right way and allowed the audience to see that something bad was going on or was going to happen.
Editing:
I believe that within this clip they did the editing will, the reason for this is because throughout the clip it allows us to see who is involved within the clip and who does what. However, i also believe that They did not leave the edits to long and did not cut them to sort, making them the right length of time. Throughout this clip they used jump cuts, whereas, i believe that they should have used a couple more of the other cuts to make it a bit more exciting for the audience.
Sounds:
They used the sound very well within the clip, as i believe that all of the sounds they used allowed the audience to see that something strange was going on. Therefore, building up tension for the audience and are left wondering what is going to happen. Also the music matched up with what was going on within the clip.
Mise-en-scene
I believe that the setting they set the clip in matched up with what they was doing. The reason fro this is because where they had it in a house it allows you to see that the boy and girl have some sort of relationship as they live together. Not just this, but it also allows the audience to see that something bad has happened within the house. Meaning that it all works well together. Also it allows he audience to see that the girl is at home doing the dishes and cooking wiles the man is out doing something he is not meant to. However, then coming into the home and changing the audience mind.
The Catalyst:
Camera:
The ways that the camera was used within this clip was very well. The reason for this is because they used all different shots to show what was going on and that something bad was going to happen. The reason for this was because they used a close up in the first part, the reason for this was to show the boy breaking into the house and allowing the audience to see something bad was going to happen. However, when the boy was in the house they used a high angle shot to show the audience that he was going to go upstairs, with this bag he has on his back. They then use a medium shot to show the boy getting ready for what he is about to do, which was him opening the gun and getting ready. Therefore, building up the tension for the audience and putting them on edge. Then focusing on the boy and him holding the gun out the window allowing the audience to see that something bad is going to happen. Then, they use the camera to show the audience that the gun is pointing at a man and getting ready to shot him, once this has been done the audience is able to see what happened through the lens of the gun until the an packs up and goes. The rest of the clip it allows you to see the other man running away. using long shots, close ups, medium shots, tracking shots and close ups.
Editing:
In this clip 'The Catalyst' i believe that the editing was done extremely well. The reason for this is when the boy was getting ready with the gun. The editing was good for this as they allowed the audience to see through the gun and what he was point at. Therefore, making it look realistic. They also used short and quick edits to show the audience that something bad is going to happen within the first part of the clip. However, when after the shooting took place they made the editing fast, the reason for this is to build up tension for the audience and make them wonder what is going to happen to the other boy. On the other hand, when the boy goes into the room and sets up the gun, they use long edits, the reason i believe they have done this is to build the tension for the audience and make them wonder what is going to happen.
Sound:
At the beginning of this clip they used very slow and mysterious music, the reason they have done this is to build up the tension for the audience and to make them wonder what is going to happen. However, when the boy then gets the gun out the music starts to speed up and starts to get a bit louder, this is to show the audience that something bad is going to happen and to build up suspense. However, in the lats part of the clip the music becomes quite and then builds up when the man starts to strangle to boy in the car, allowing the audience to see that something bad is happening. Therefore, to show the man also has more power over the other people.
Mise-en-scene:
The setting that this clip was set in i believe works very well. The reason for this is because in the house it allows the audience to see what is going on and that the man is very hidden and catching someone off guard. Therefore, the other boys being in the field allows the audience to see that they are meeting up some where secretive and are there on businesses doing something that may be illegal. Therefore, they set it in a good setting as the audience are able to see what is going on by the setting they are in and the surroundings. Allowing the audience to capture every moment.
Power Cut:
Camera:
i believe that they used camera angles and shots very well within this clip, the reason for this is because they allows the audience to see what was going on by the different camera angles that they used. However, i believe that in the first part of the clip they used the pan shot very well as i allowed the audience to see where this clip was taking place, and they used it very affectively. Not only this but in the middle of the clip they used the point of view angle this worked affectively to show the audience what the boy was looking at and giving the feeling that you was in his shoes. On the other hand, hey used close up, medium and long angle shots, this is to show the audience what is going on, they all worked well within the sequence. All of these shots built up the sequence and allows the audience to wonder what is going to happen next and put them on edge. in this sequence they used a lot of medium shots when it was quite, peaceful and normal. However, when something was happening or something was going to go wrong they used the tracking shot or long shot like we was following the bad things that were going on. They also used close up for when it had to be more detailed and when they wanted the audience to focus on something in particular, which i believe they used very well.
Editing:
In this sequence i like how they kept flicking form on shot to the other, not just this they used different effects such as the dissolve and not just a straight cut, i believe that is built up the tension and allows the audience to wonder what is going to happen. I like the way that the whole video is in black and white, the reason for this is because it gives the impression that it is meant to be an old video. In this sequence they used the jump shot, this is where you are able to see a person going through the door and coming out of the door. However, through this clip i believe they did the editing well, although they could have done somethings a bit more effectively i believe the majority of it built up tension and suspense for the audience. They also used zoom in's to give a better affect and to give more detail and build up suspense when it is needed.
Sounds:
In this clip the sound went with everything that was going on and built up the tension and suspense for the audience. However, i did not like the fact that the music was going on the whole way through the clip, as you was not able to her what the characters were saying, Therefore, i believe that they should have only put the music in at certain places rather then the whole way through the sequence. On the other hand, when there was tension or suspense the music allow the audience to see this and when it was calm and normal the music was also calm and quite to show that nothing bad was going to happen and that everything was normal at that point.
Mise-en-scene:
The mise-en-scene, was very good within this sequence as it shows us what is going on as it has been placed in a school and shows us who is who and who is doing what. the clothes and props were used well and shows the audience what is going on. However, at the end of the sequence when the camera zoomed into the screw driver, this prop was used well to show the audience that it was going to be used as a weapon and that then builds up the tension for the audience. It also allows the audience to see the relationships towards each other and allows them to see what is going on.
