North by North West

What is the film North by NorthWest?
The film North by Northwest is a 1959 American spy thriller film and a man called Alfred Hitchcock directed it. This picture shows a lot about the film North by Northwest, the reason for that is because this cover shows one of the greatest scenes that is in the film itself. this is the scene where the men inside the airplane try to kill Alfred Hitchcock. The write of this film was Ernest Lehman, Directed and Produced By Alfred Hitchcock and Stared by Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jessie Royce Landis.

About Alfred Hitchcock:

Alfred Hitchcock planned everything that happened in every scene of his movies. However, he always learned the dialog and he very rarely ever needs to look at the script. Also every time he was in a  film he made sure that he did not at the camera, the reason for this was so that it looked realistic and to make it look like he was actually there in real life and that it was really happening to him. he was also a English film director and producer and have been in many different famous films in his time. Alfred Hitchcock used to have a saying which was 'put there toe in the cold water of fear to see what it is like' this meant to make the audience feel what was going on within the scene so make then feel the fear when they are watching it.

About North by Northwest:

The film North by Northwest was a very popular and famous film when it come out and still is very well known. it was also a face pacing film and had frequent actions, the way that we know this is because there was very thrilling parts of the film such as when he has to wait for 'Mr.Kaplin' on the dusty road with the airplane, because one minute it was all fine and he was just waiting and then tension started to build up when cars started to come past, making the audience wonder whether it was going to be him or not, and then before you new it Alfred Hitchcock has a plane chasing after him trying to shoot him.

Narrative that Alfred Hitchcock used:
In this film Alfred Hitchcock used narratives and the way that he used these was because he used binary opposites, this means where he used two things against each other for example he had himself as the hero again James Mason who played the bad guy, meaning that they where both working against each other and only one way going to succeed. Also the villain in the film North by Northwest was much more powerful then the hero the way we know this is because he has more money, power and experience whereas, Alfred Hitchcock did not due to being a normal man and getting mistaken for 'Mr.Kaplin'. However, although he was just a normal everyday man he was clever about what he was doing and had some tricks up he selves like the scene and the auction.

Devices:
The devices that where used are suspense the ways in which they use suspense is in the airplane scene building up suspense when Alfred Hitchcock is waiting for Mr.Kaplin, as every car comes past making the audience think/wonder if it is him. not only this but when the airplane is driving towards him wondering if it is going to hit him. However, red herrings are also used the reason for this is because the girl is made out to want to help him at first making the audience think she is a good person, then we find out she is working with the bad guy, making the audience now think that she is a bad guy as well and was setting him up. Therefore, we then find out that in the end she was good all along and was just trying to get rid of the bad guy and was seen as a bad person. Also a cliff hanger was used within this film, it was the scene when the lady was actually hanging off the cliff, making the audience wonder if she was going to fall and weather the bad guy was going to push them off.

MT Rushmore believed:

Mt Rushmore believed that symbols of order and throwing in disorder has to happen. Not only this but in a film you can not just have all suspense, the reason for this is because it will end up getting boring, so you have to have face pacing and then it getting slower and calming down, and possible a bit of laughter for the audience. He believed that the villain was in charge and the hero would just react to what they have done. He believed that this is what a made a film and what the audience enjoyed.

McGuffin believed:

McGuffin believed that there is always something that has to drive the plot along but it is something that no one cares about like in North by Northwest it is the microfilm. This is the thing that drives the film along and the reason for everything happening but the audience dose not care what happens to this all they care about is what is going to happen to the bad guys and the hero's. The object that drives the plot along is usually shown in the first and the last part of the film as it is not that important to the audience through the film. Therefore, it is the thing that sets the story and makes a meaning to the whole thing.

What they used through out the film:

The things that Alfred Hitchcock used through out the film is the three structure. This is the way that the story is set out, for example, set up (25%), confrontation (50%), climax (25%) and this is the traditional Hollywood narrative structure. However, they also used some of the 8 key characters from Vladimir Propp's theory, and the ones that were used were, hero - Alfred Hitchcock, villain - James Mason, helper - the detective, donor (provider) - James Mason's helpers, princess - Eva Marie Saint. In the film North by Northwest they also used Todorov's narrative theory, this was the 5 stages. These was a state of equilibrium, this is where everything is going normal and nothing weird is going on. A disrupt of that order by an event, where something happens randomly. A recognition that the disorder has occurred, when the audience realise that something is going on that isn't normal. Attempt to repair the damage, this is when the hero tries to fix things and make them go back to normal. Returns or restoration of a new equilibrium, this is when things go back to normal but something is different for example the person may end up married or moving away so it is not completely back to how it used to be. Also Barthes enigma codes was used, that there was a idea of a mystery and that all texts are complex bundles of means. That a problem is also introduced. Levi Strauss theory was also in this film because he believed that their always had to be bad Vs good, hero Vs villain, women Vs man, and this happened because it was the good guy Vs the bad guy.

Analyzing the trailer:

Analyzing the trailer for the film North by Northwest.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk0GbTMMbP0

This trail shows a lot about the film its self, back them when this film was first made their wasn't televisions meaning to go and watch a film they had to go to the cinema. To see what was on the cinema they had to go and watch the trails and this is on of the trails, of the film North by Northwest. In those days the trails showed a lot about a film, it gave a lot away and was like a short play of the film, as where now trailers are only about 1-2 minutes long and do not show you most of the film just little clips from it. This trailer was made for people to get excited about the film and transfer the fear/excitement in the people so that they wanted to watch it to find out more about the film and what was going on.

Analyzing a scene:

Analyzing the airplane scene. I believe that this was the best scene, the reason for this is because it allowed the audience to be on edge wondering what was going to happen next. Not only this, but it was an excited scene and made you wonder about many different thing, and was also very excited and interesting. It also allowed the audience to look through the characters eyes and experience what they was going through and feel the fear of it, almost like it was happening to them. However, it allows the audience to have a chance to see how he is feeling and what is going through his mind, because the audience feel the tension when Alfred Hitchcock is standing their waiting. Also makes the audience wonder whether he is going to turn up or not.

In the day's when North by Northwest was made:
In the day's when the film North by Northwest was made it was a very different time. The reason for this is because men where seen as the more powerful and better sex. Whereas, the women were mainly seen as less powerful and more controlled by the men. Also in the day you never really heard and bisexual or gay people as it was not that common and not that spoken about, how it is now a days. That is why in the film North by Northwest you notice that the women is more or a person that dose stuff for the men and the men are more controlling and in charge of everything, and put the rules down.

Media theory

Enigma codes (mystery)- Roland Barthes:
Roland Barthes said that there always has to be a mystery in a film. according to Roland Barthes there is always more then one way to read a piece of text and he said that there was a plurality of meaning rather then one correct reading. he said you have to read the text and then re-read it.Roland Barthes also said that there will always be a problem introduced and this usually occurs in the disruption stage. He also believed in such things as open text, this is where the problem has not be resolved at the end and closed text, this is where the problem has been solved at the end.

Binary opposites (Hero's and villains) Levi's Strauss:

Levi's Strauss believe that there had to be an good guy and a bad guy hero again villain and women against man, in ever film he believed that they all shared the same structure whatever the story, and that characters and actions can be grouped in to 8 character roles and 31 functions. Levi's Strauss believed that narratives van be organised through binary opposition which means two things are opposite.

Traditional Hollywood narrative structure:
The traditional Hollywood narrative structure was that it was a three act structure this is where there was 25% of the time spent on setting it up, 50% time for the confrontation and 25% on the climax. They also had linear (chronological), few, if any, sub plots, tendency towards closure at the end of the film,

Todorov's narrative theory:
Todorov's believe in produced theory and he also believed that he could apply this to any film.He also believed that every film followed five stages and these stages where:

1. A state of equilibrium (everything was normal)

2. A disrupt of that order by an event (where something happens such as someone getting kidnapped)
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred (has released what has happened)
4. Attempt to repair the damage (trying to sort out the problem)
5. A return or restoration of a new equilibrium (life goes back to normal but in a different way, for example they might get with a girl at the end)

Vladimir Propp:

Vladimir Propp believed that each character has a type, he released this when he started to analyse traditional folk stories. he discovered that there was eight different key character roles these are:
- Hero's
- Villains
- Helpers
- Donor (provider)
- Father
- Princess
- False hero (character may perform more then one role for example you may think he is the good guy by helping by the ends up being the bad guy).

Laura Mulvey's:
Laura Mulvey's believe that the camera is a man, the reason for this is because men look at women as a sexual object and so dose the camera, making the camera a male. Laura quoted that 'Women are the object of a male erotic desire'. She believes that the audience (men and women) are forced to see women as a sexual object.
She also believes that in films women do not have agency, the reason for this is because they do not move the plot forward. It is always the men that do.
Cinema's reflect patriarchal (male dominated) society.

Patriarchy and phallocentrusim linked (phallus - penis) a symbol of power, for example, guns - phallus - power.

Thriller Conventions

Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film and television.

What do thrillers have?

All Thrillers have fast pacing, frequent action. Not only this but they also have resourceful hero's, which has a more powerful and better equipped villains. However, the villains are usually man sided with a very attractive women just to make it that bit more exciting. On the other hand, although hero's are mainly men there can also be women hero's and over the years women hero's are starting to become more popular, for example, the film Alien. Therefore, a thriller is a villain driven plot, this means where the villain makes obstacles for the hero to overcome. for example the film taken, the villains take his child for the hero to then go and rescue her.

Devices that are used:

Suspense: This is when they build up tension to make you thing what is going to happen next.
Red herrings: This is when you have been tricked for example you may think that someone is a bad guy when it turns out in the end that they are one of the good guys.
Cliffhangers: this is when they leave you thinking what is going to happen next and making you think what could happen.

Places that it may take place:

Usually thrillers take place in exotic, romantic places and mainly in foreign places, for example, Paris or a tropical island.

Hero's:

There are two type's of hero's there is either the hard man that everybody knows is a hero and there is also the man that gets dragged into it that you did not expect to be a hero.

About thriller:

Most of the time thriller overlap with mystery stories, but are distinguished by the structure of there plot. Thriller are about hero's that thwart future plans rather then a mystery story which uncovers crimes that have already happened, and then this is spoiled by knowing the murders identity unlike in a thriller. Therefore, thriller are on a must greater scale. The main things in a thriller is the danger and the violent's that takes place. The mood of a thriller must be fearful excitement, short term is if it 'thrills' it is a thriller.

The climax:

Mystery climax is solving
Thriller climax is the hero defeating the villains and saving is own life as well as others lives.

Types of thrillers:

There are many different types of thriller some of these are:
Legal thriller - The Last Juror
