The Birds

What the film is about?
This film is about a young lady and a young man who find a little romance in a bird shop. It all starts off as a little joke and then she goes to visit this young man with the 'Love Birds' he wanted to buy. Then thousands of bird started to attack people and house in this village for no reason. These people are also middle or high class people, there is a lower class man within this film but he is displayed as a mad, crazy man. That nobody took very serious. However, it is also about a mother and a ex girlfriend that where also involved in this young man life and don't know if they are happy with his new girlfriend. This film is 119 minutes long. the director of this film is Alfred Hitchcock. Writers Daphne Du Maurier (story) and Evan Hunter (Screenplay). Star where Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren and Suzanne Pleshette. This film features over 370 effects shots and the final shot within this film consists of 32 separate filmed elements. In the film the ending does not show us why these bird attacks kept on happening and it they will go away, it left everyone wondering. Also in this film they do not use and over music and it is only the sounds that are already in the movie when filming it. I also believe that Alfred Hitchcock has also succeeded with "to put their toe in the cold water of fear to see what it's like”.

About the trailer The Bird:
This trailer shows us a lot about all of the things that take place within the film, for example it shows us the birds attacking and that the garage set on fir due to this. This trailer gives the audience a brief idea of what happens within the film. It if focused largely on the lady within this trailer and how she is affected by the birds, almost like she is the cause for them. A bit in the trailer shows when they are in the cafe trying to explain what is happening and that thousands of birds have just attacked a school, and how people do not believe what she is saying, then all of a sudden it happens out side the cafe. It shows you a lot about the film, but dose not give the main points away and how it all started for example it dose not show why it is happening nor does it show who she is. However, the over voices allow the audience to understand the different scenes that they are showing and what they mean. This trailer gives us a lot about what is happening within the film and what is the problem.

About the ending scene of The Birds:
The ending scene of this film is very spectacular, The reason for this is because the had to do 32 separate shots to make sure that they got all the birds and the effect for it. Not only this but in the last scene Alfred Hitchcock sent the young lady up to the bed room and when he did this she did not know what was up their. Therefore, when they was filming this part of the scene her reactions are 100% real as it was a shock to her and he did not tell her what was up in that room. From this scene where the bird attacked her, the birds ended up actually biting her and she ended up coming out with cuts on her, due to not knowing what was going on. At the very end when the mother and Alfred Hitchcock is taking the young lady to the car it shows you the fear on her face and then shows all of the birds sitting there, this allows the audience to see the fear within the young ladies eyes and to make the audience feel fear to. It also makes you feel inside the movie like you are experiencing it.

Devices:
The devices that where used was suspense the reason for this is because in the scene where the bird started to attack the school, when the young lady was waiting to pick up the young girl form school she as smoking out side on the bench, and all of the bird started to surround her on the climbing fame. However, the audience could see all of the birds slowly gathering up and more and more coming, whereas, she was not aware of this until their was hundreds of them sitting on the climbing frame. Therefore, this cause tension and suspense the because the audience could see that the bird where gathering around and she did not know about this making the audience on edge wondering what is going to happen to her. Making the audience think that she may get hurt. However, she then realises and runs into the school to try to get all of the children out before the birds attack and she is not successful with this as as soon as all of the children start to come out of the school the bird start to attack. making the audience wonder what is going to happen to the children and whether they are going to be alright.
Narratives used within this film:
The narratives that where used in this film is that they used the traditional Hollywood narrative structure. The reason we know this is because Alfred Hitchcock used the three method structure, set up (25%), the confrontation (50%), climax (25%). This was also a open text the reason for this is because there was no closure at the end of the film , the reason this is because the audience was left wondering why this happened and what will happen next as it did not show us anything after they had left. The Vladimir Propp theory was used within this film, because some of the 8 characters that he believes in was in the movie for example, Hero - Alfred Hitchcock when he saved the young lady, the princess - the young lady, Helper - the teacher at the school was the teacher, and a villain - the villain where the birds. Todorov's theory was within this film as equilibrium – disruption – resolution – new equilibrium was all used throughout the film. However, Roland Barthes the reason for this is because there was there was a problem introduced and the problem was the birds attacking everyone within the village. Polysemic texts because there was lot of different meanings. Not only this but you could question if the film is just a thriller it could also be saying something about the people relationship towards nature. Levi Strauss theory was also used as there was two opposite things these where, mother and lover, man and women and Nature (birds) and humans. These are used through out the film and they are all again each other like the mother in one of the scenes does not agree with Alfred Hitchcock dating this young lady as she has heard things about her. But during the middle towards the end of the film it become the humans and the birds.

Camera angles:
Camera shots:
Crane shot: This was used when the bird attack the garage near the cafe the way that this was used was because it was looking down on what was happening from a long high distance, allowing use to see all of the people making the look powerless and weak.
Medium shot: This shot has been used throughout the whole of the film the reason for this is because in different scene they have to use the medium shot to give affect and use it quite a lot.
Close up: This shot has been used a lot as well when there is fear or something going on the reason for this is because it allows the audience see the fear and how bad it is, for example in the scene where the children are getting attacked by birds they do a close up to show the effect and fear of the children. Not only this there was also a lot of close ups on the birds.
Long shot: This shot is also used quite a lot within the different scenes the reason for this is to show the audience what is happening and to give a bit more effect to what is going on within the scene.
Wide shot: The wide shot was used when their was loads of birds out side of the house at the end of the scene, and they used a wide shot to project how many birds were out side the house. Therefore, giving the effect that there was a lot of birds.
Tracking shot: This was used when they children where running away form the birds in the scene when the birds attacked the school. This was used to follow the children running away from the birds, using the tracking shot made this more effective, as you was able to how terrified the children are.
