The first use of colour was in a film called Voyage a Travers L'Impossible by the pioneer Georges Melies in 1904. This film was hand painted so that they was able to use colour. However, it was fake as ti was not filmed in colour and only painted over.
Next development:The next development was the introduction of two-strip Technicolor using only red and green when filming. This technique was used in the film called The mystery of wax museum in 1933. They then introduced the full three strip which was using red, green and blue to create a better affect for the audience. This was used in the dil Was becky sharp in 1935.
Reality and fantasy:From the 1930s to the 1940s black and white films were displayed as reality and coloured films were used to display fantasy, and example of this was int he film The Wizard Of Oz in 1939. However, today opposite is true.
Denotation and Connotation:
- Denotation - This is when the literal description of and idea, concept or object.
- Connotation - This is what we associate with a particular idea, concept or idea.
Therefore, meaning that colours work on the subconscious mind to create different moods, for example,
Eyes wide shut:
The colour blue was used within this movie to show that it was dark and sad, also to give the impression that it was lonely and very cold, Relationship may not be very strong and may be going in a bad way.
The colour red was used to show he come from a warm and bright room to show happiness and then brought into a sad and lonely blue room.
The colour red was used throughout this film to show danger, fear and anger. however, at first it demonstrate happiness, excitement and joy, which then quickly turns into though and danger. This allows you to see that bad things are going to happen through out this film.
